Laser Klan: A KKK Science Fiction and Fact Post

Last week, Stephen Colbert aired a segment on his Comedy Central show about the Ku Klux Klan titled Laser Klan. Colbert got the idea for the segment from a 2013 news story about a General Electric Co. industrial mechanic from Saratoga County (NY) and a computer software expert from Columbia County (NY) who plotted to design “a radiation weapon that could fit in a small van and be used to silently kill humans.” (Note: Crawford is reportedly a member of a tea party group called Americans Demanding Liberty and Freedom and a member of United Northern & Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.)  An FBI task force uncovered the plot and charged the two men, Glendon Scott Crawford and Eric J. Feight, “with conspiring to sell the weapon to Jewish groups or a southern branch of the Ku Klux Klan.”

According to the Times Union, a federal complaint said that their “vehicle-mounted radiation gear was intended to be remotely controlled and capable of aiming a high-energy lethal beam of radioactivity at human targets.” Targets of the device were supposed to die mysteriously “from radiation poisoning within days.” Officials said that Crawford and Feight “never actually obtained a radiation source and the device was not fully constructed.”

Stephen Colbert said that Viacom had sent him a letter expressing the company’s concern about his airing Laser Klan—“a cartoon depicting President Obama and the KKK teaming up to fight an alien menace”–during Black History Month. Colbert chose to ignore Viacom and aired it last Thursday.

I can’t embed Laser Klan…so click on the following link to watch it on the Colbert Nation website.

    Elaine,

Hilarious. What made it more so was these idiots got caught because they went to a Rabbi for help. I guess this is the “New Klan” that loves Israel because of its centrality to Armageddon as opposed to the “Old Klan” that hated Jews for their horns.

  2. Blouise says:

    Colbert has guts.

  3. It’s strange to admire a political satire program as my favorite “hard-hitting news” show.

(I haven’t abandoned the blog. We’re in the process of buying a house and, as it turns out, I’m only capable of obsessing over one thing at a time.)

  4. Elaine M. says:

I love Stephen Colbert too! I think we get some of the best hard-hitting pieces on politics and social issues from Colbert and Jon Stewart.

Recently, Howard Kurtz (Fox News) took offense at a segment Colbert did last week:

Howard Kurtz Fires Back At Stephen Colbert Over Hillary Clinton Segment

    Excerpt;
“The Colbert Report” has long been known for its comedic and satirical take on the media and breaking news stories, but Fox News Channel’s Howard Kurtz apparently doesn’t see anything funny about it.

Colbert ran a segment Wednesday night where he joked about Fox News’ obsession with Hillary Clinton’s age if she were to run in the upcoming presidential election. He called out Kurtz in particular for raising the question, “How old is too old?”

Kurtz, the host of “MediaBuzz,” warned viewers Thursday that he would be hitting back at Colbert during his show Sunday morning, and he was true to his word.

“Listen, Colbert,” Kurtz said sternly. “I asked whether it was fair for commentators to harp on her [Hillary Clinton’s] age. I guess that was too nuanced for your ‘black and white’ view of the world.”

Kurtz proceeded to list off a number of reasons why Colbert’s segment was misleading, asking him why he didn’t manage to fit all of the facts into his comedic narrative.

“Even fake anchors should have standards,” Kurtz said. “You, sir, were not even truthy.”

  5. Blouise says:

In the cartoon I was particularly drawn to the Paula Deen phone.

  6. Elaine M. says:

    Blouise,

    Ditto that!

  7. swarthmoremom says:

That Paula Deen phone was very clever.

  8. Elaine M. says:

    swarthmoremom,

Guess who is still going after me on RIL? Doncha know…I’m an Obama “coddler”…and a pathological enabler. I have little doubt that the petulant little man wants to get rid of me. He keeps poking at me in an attempt to get me to loose my cool. He’s so pathetic!

  9. swarthmoremom says:

Elaine, I thought he was talking to me so I responded. What does he want? US troops in the Ukraine? He is also blaming liberals for the outbreaks of whooping cough. lol He really days hate liberals.

  10. swarthmoremom says:

    does hate

  11. Blouise says:

I suspect he’s still following orders. A good Republican soldier wearing a Libertarian uniform with permission to shoot from the hip. BTW … whatever happened to all that civility stuff? I don’t visit there but it sounds as kill-zoneish as ever.

  12. swarthmoremom says:

It might be worse. Elaine and Annie are constantly under attack and they are outnumbered as the posting population has moved to the right in my opinion, particularly so, with regards to gay and women’s rights.

  13. Blouise says:

    SwM,

That would fit with the Fox News appearances.

  14. Lisa D says:

I don’t comment often, so I apologize if this is out of place. I am about ready to “lose” my bookmark to RIL. It seems like the schism of the recent past has completely changed the flavor of the comments. I really appreciate the bloggers here, and the civility that seems to have completely disappeared over there. (Ethicist from RIL)
