Reversing deforestation is complicated;
planting a tree is simple.

– Martin O’Malley

Iceland lost most of its trees over a thousand years ago, when the Vikings arrived, turning their battle axes on the dense forests that covered one-quarter of the country, to build their homes and heat them, and make charcoal for smelting.

Beginning in the late 19th century, modern Icelanders have been trying to grow new forests to stabilize the country’s eroding soil in their ‘wet desert.’

This New York Times Instagram takes a somewhat less optimistic view:

Progress has been glacially slow, partly because many of the trees that were planted earlier turned out to be the wrong trees for the job, but also because the scope of the project is so vast, and climate change is continuing. Will the trees planted in this decade still be the right choice seventy years from now?

Only time will tell.

When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to
use it with love and respect.”
