Because it made me smile when I needed to . . .

submitted by Gene Howington

I have some friends (Blouise looking your direction) who don’t care for keyboard music, finding it too sterile. It’s a legitimate criticism although one I disagree with as a matter of taste. While I love more naturalistic instruments and arrangements, I also appreciate what is called today “electronica” or “EDM” (electronic dance music) just like I appreciated some New Wave in high school and the often heavily electronic sonic sculptures of Progressive Rock back when I was mumble mumble old. However, I do use discrimination in what I like no matter what the genre might be. Sturgeon’s Law applies to music and pretty much everything. I play guitar, but the first instrument I ever bought was a Moog Opus 3 synthesizer.  To me, the strength of a composition is answered by the question “Does it hold up well under rearrangement?”  That is why I had to smile when I heard British guitarists Show Hawk Duo playing an acoustic medley of songs by French electronica duo Daft Punk. I thought it was wonderful. Here’s the clip from the Larkhall Festival in Bath, England.

Enjoy.

    🙂 …I enjoyed that

  2. I thought you might. 😀

I especially liked the fugue-y counterpoint bit at the end. I love counterpoint. One of the reasons I’m a sucker for Bach arrangements for guitar.

  3. I built my first mountain dulcimer back about 1977. The traditional mountain dulcimer is usually a three stringed instrument. I use four strings, but the melody string is paired and played as one…much like the pairs on a 12 string guitar. The extra string gives the melody string more volume. Normally, the other two strings are drones. Got to remember the history of the mountain people of the Appalachians who created this unique instrument….they were Scots-Irish. The use of drones on bagpipes was part of the culture and heritage.

Jean Ritchie plays the mountain dulcimer the traditional way, but the late David Schnaufer played chords. Notice his instrument has the melody string paired.

However, I just discovered Sam Edelston. I want to be him when I grow up.

    Stanley,

While we wait on the forensic investigation of attorney Mark Mayfield’s death to be completed & further news from the possible Mississippi Senate primary recount I’ll go ahead with a few other items.

    First, some house keeping.

A piece of advice I really liked in that video: Titanic – Hymn to the sea Uilleann Pipes remember, was the lines below.

“Always remember all the good things, and don’t ever regret anything, you will get a chance to redeem your self.”

I bring this up this time in regards to Gene H’s website.

I think Gene H was handling his opinions & website very well. I’ve no problems I know of with Gene.

Nor do I know of any major problems with you. I addressed a couple of concerns I had with you in a above post.

Many/most times I agree with your guy’s opinions.

Now I did run into a few snags with a couple of the other author’s & a couple of posters on Gene’s site.

Maybe over time those concerns over their opinions could be addressed.

Yet as I’ve heard said around here: Everyone comes to Jesus in their own time.

I hope they get their chance to redeem themselves, but I’ve not the time, I like them & don’t wish to be rude or insensitive towards them.

They can change their opinions if the wish too.

It took former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker & Former Asst. Treasury Paul Craig Roberts 30-35 years before they each changed their opinions to match mine. Up until then I remained ticked off with them & now I’m fine with them & enjoy having them as allies.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear the air on this & hopefully I’ll find the time to pass this along to Gene H.**

For what ever reason my dad seemed to me to be needlessly embarrassed that he had only finished 6th grade & had to educated himself on his own afterwards, & he did.

Phk public schools if you wish to phk them up, you have no idea the amount of money & responsibility people are capable of handling outside of your type corrupt govt restraints. F you, you don’t & I know it 1st hand!

One of my granddads would play in public, but my dad was shy.

Anyway, listen to the Willie Nelson part, my dad was also a picker & that’s what he picked, the Spanish guitar.

    Gnite.

For clarification of my comment: Right now, I’m off some major battles for me & & just as soon as I find another I favor I’m attacking once again by all “Legal” means.
