Celebration of the Horse is this weekend, so here’s a lovely video of some Friesians running.
The Friesian horse comes from the Netherlands. During the Middle Ages, ancestors of Friesian horses were in great demand as war horses because their size enabled them to carry a knight in armor. The modern day Friesian is used both in harness and under saddle. Most recently, the breed has been introduced to the field of dressage.
Nona Blyth Cloud has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area for over 50 years, spending much of that time commuting on the 405 Freeway. After Hollywood failed to appreciate her genius for acting and directing, she began a second career managing non-profits, from which she has retired.
Nona has now resumed writing whatever comes into her head, instead of reports and pleas for funding. She lives in a small house overrun by books with her wonderful husband.
Brandi loved Friesians. She had a collection of Breyer horses, and there were a couple of Friesians in her collection. I don’t know if she ever got to ride one, but she thought they were among the most beautiful of horses. She said many times that she wished we had a horse farm so she could actually own some of her favorite horse breeds.
Three or four years ago we were discussing a trip to Scotland. Both of us had wanted to go, so we were scouting out places to stay and visit. When we got to the Isle of Skye, she was hooked on going there. Seems they have riding adventure tours….on Clydesdales. She loved Clydesdales. If you have never been close to one, it is hard to describe how massive they are.
Her older sister used to ride a hunter-jumper horse that was half Clydesdale and half Quarter horse. I have a photo of her clearing a jump in a competition, and there must be three feet of air between his belly and the top of the fence. http://www.adventureclydesdale.com/about/abouti

She had great taste – these horses are gorgeous!
