Sometimes You Gotta Have Sympathy for the Police: Open Carry Gun Nut Triggers Lockdown at Michigan High School…Taunts Cops (VIDEOS)

Last week, a gun advocate triggered a brief school lockdown while he was demonstrating his open carry rights near Lamphere High School in Madison Heights, Michigan. According to Travis Gettys (Raw Story), police said that they had received “about a million calls” about the man, “who lives near the school and was carrying a rifle and holstered pistol.”

According to WXYZ in Detroit, police said that the man identified himself as an Open Carry advocate who was exercising his rights. It is reportedly legal in Michigan to carry “either a handgun in a holster or a long gun that is not pointed in a threatening way in public.”

Around 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday, police “spotted the man, who they recognized from previous encounters…” Gettys said that police officers called school administrators “when the man approached school property.” Administrators then “locked down the school for nearly an hour.”

Rita Lewis, the human resource director with the school district, said police “had their eye on him. He started in Royal Oak, and he walked quite a ways to Madison Heights and then walked back.”

Officer Carey Spangler said, “We had a citizen exercise his right to open carry, and he chose to exercise that right near the high school.” Spangler added, “We’ve dealt with this individual in the past. We know of him to exercise his right to open carry.”

The unidentified man posted a video of his encounter with Madison Heights police to YouTube under the moniker Nunya Beeswax. He wrote the following blurb to accompany his video:

Open Carry walk Royal Oak/Madison Heights #3

After being approached by the Royal Oak and Madison Heights police departments, while out on an open carry walk, I was followed by the Madison Heights police department. They followed me from a distance, which was troubling, because they could clearly see that no laws were being broken. After initially declining to speak with the police, I decided to approach them and ask why they were essentially stalking a law abiding citizen. I did not appreciate the fact that one of these trigger happy morons placed his hand on his pistol when he approached me.

The Madison Heights police officers “made sure the man did not intend to enter the school and let him continue walking. They neither asked for his name nor for his destination.

Guns may be openly carried on school property by those with a valid concealed carry permit, although police did not appear to ask the man for one.

However, his previous writings suggest he may not have a concealed carry permit.

“Bottom line: I don’t give a shit what any of you liberal pussies has to say about my decision openly bear arms,” the man said in a Google Plus post from November 2013. “I will continue to do so, not because I have a license, but because I am a free man. So chime in all you want about how I was looking for trouble, or trying to bait the cops, and I will continue to exercise my rights … All of them. Also, if the police approach you, and you don’t turn your camera on, you are a f*cking idiot.”

WXYZ reported that police have had previous confrontations with gun advocates who recorded their encounters and then posted them online.

Shane Hudson—who is also a Second Amendment gun advocate—witnessed what happened near the high school in Madison Heights last Wednesday. He said that the incident “makes us look a little crazy. It makes people scared. There’s a time and a place to do this type of thing.”

Evidently, police have to handle such situations with extreme care. Corey Haines, Madison Heights Assistant Police Chief , was quoted as saying that “it is difficult. It is a balancing act. We have the rights of the citizen. His right to open carry.”

WXYZ said that a federal lawsuit was filed a year ago “after a man in Grand Rapids was ordered to the ground by police during an open carry demonstration.”

Gun advocates say gun owners need to be ambassadors for the cause when doing open carry demonstrations and not deliberately scare people.

One more example of why open carry is such a “good” idea!

  2. Inga (Annie) says:

Well at least they didn’t shoot him on sight.

  3. Inga,
    Wrong color, wrong town.
Use your imagination. What if he had been carrying while any shade of brown instead of creamy pink?

  5. I am a huge advocate of the 2nd amendment and nearly every aspect of the Bill of Rights, but this man is as with so many other things now simply aggravating a situation that we do not need to focus on now.
This is idiocy and what is he really accomplishing? Other inflaming anti-gun advocates, feeding that fire and agitating law enforcement and giving other firearm owners a bad reputation and negative attention? Nothing.

“Also, if the police approach you, and you don’t turn your camera on, you are a f*cking idiot.”

No, that’s not actually what makes you a fucking idiot. Your flaunting open carry, compensating for the man you aren’t, makes you an idiot.
Oh…and “I don’t give a shit what any of you liberal pussies has to say…” makes you a misogynistic teabilly idiot, to boot.
Sorry for the multiple redundancy in that last sentence. Poetic open carry license.
