WSVN reported today that the FBI “is launching an inquiry into the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s internal affairs investigation that led to the firing of three police officers over racial slurs’ that they used in personal text messages and a racist video. The video, titled The Hoods, was created by former Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Alex Alvarez. Alvarez, 22, resigned from the police department while the internal affairs investigation was ongoing.
According to investigators, Officer Alvarez’s former fiancée e-mailed the video to Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley last October. Investigators said that “she also e-mailed racist text messages between Alvarez and three other officers.” Those officers—Christopher Sousa, James Wells and Jason Holding—were all fired on Friday.
The video made by Alex Alvarez:
The text messages, which were released after a news conference Friday, included the use of the N-word and Wells referring to someone as a “Retarded brown.”…
Adderley said the officers claimed they were just jokes, but authorities indicated there is zero tolerance for any type of racism in the department.
“I had a wet dream that you two found those n—–s in the VW and gave them the death penalty right there on the spot,” one of the texts reads. Many of their extremely hostile and racially charged conversations can be read at the Sun Sentinel.
According to another text, one of the officers said, “We are coming and drinking all your beer and killing n—–s.”
While their actions aren’t illegal, the officers were officially terminated due to department misconduct; including conduct unbecoming of a police officer and engaging in conduct prejudicial to the good of the order of the police department.
Jack Seiler, Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, said that he was “very disappointed, disgusted and shocked by this incident.” Seiler added, “The inappropriate racist behavior exhibited by those involved is unacceptable and reprehensible. It violates the trust we place in our law enforcement officers; it damages the bond we have established with our community; and it undermines the standards to which each and every City employee is held accountable.”
In a statement, Mayor Seiler told 7News, “We intend to fully cooperate with the FBI and provide them with any relevant information and documentation they need to facilitate the inquiry.” Seiler also said, “We will continue to focus on restoring the trust we place in our law enforcement officers, and in helping our law enforcement officers [to] repair any damage to the strong bonds they have established with our community.”
