First, we had the dumbass senator from Oklahoma James Inhofe suggesting that Pope Francis should butt out of the debate on climate change. Now we have a dumbass Fox News personality claiming that the Catholic pontiff is “the most dangerous person on the planet.”

Raw Story:

On Tuesday night’s episode of The Five, the panel discussed the pontiff’s leaked encyclical that warns of “unprecedented destruction of the ecosystem” unless drastic changes to lifestyle and energy consumption are made globally.

During the discussion, co-host Greg Gutfeld accused the pope of having a “Marxist” background and Malthusian belief system. Gutfield said, “The most dangerous person on the planet is someone who is seeking strange new respect from their adversaries. And that is what the Pope is doing…He doesn’t want to be your grandfather’s pope, he wants to be a modern pope. All he needs is dreadlocks and a dog with a bandana and he could be on Occupy Wall Street.”

Gutfield also said: “He is a Malthusian. He is in bed with Malthus. He believes that the Earth is overpopulated… and remember he said Catholics have to stop breeding like rabbits? Do you remember where that came from? That’s a Malthusian belief. And Malthusians believe that the Earth is overpopulated and it would be nice if there were a few billion people less. How does that happen? Global warming.”

  1. Mike Spindell says:

The Pope is “dangerous” from the FOX News perspective because he might be a minor threat to the 1% even having more wealth than they do. From that perspective any threat to rich people’s money is the greatest danger of all.

  2. Bob Stone says:

    Wow! Talk about selective listening.

Gutfeld: “Meanwhile the media will focus on the right and go ‘how are the conservative Catholics going to deal with climate change apostles?’ You gotta turn that over and ask ‘How is the media going to deal with a pope that is strongly against gay marriage; still against condoms; he’s pro-life and he doesn’t want female priests. So all the people claiming to embrace the pope are ignoring the intolerance they so claim to condemn among the conservatives.”

Only a Dumb-ass secure in their echo-chamber is capable of missing a comic observation so completely.

  3. I. Annie says:

Conservatives are going nuts all over the internet, exclaiming with outrage that the Pope should shove his encyclical up his cassock. I hope this Pope has good security…the extreme right wing Catholics are getting upset. Some folks are actually capeable of accepting some opinions, while rejecting others, go figure.

  4. Elaine M. says:

While Gutfield commented that the religious leader shouldn’t be involving himself in what Gutfeld considered a primarily “political” matter, co-host Juan Williams spoke up.

Williams responded, “I think the problem for you is that you put it in a box of pure politics, left and right. What about if the Pope is simply saying … we should do all we can to support God’s green earth. Is that so radical?”

  5. Malthus wasn’t wrong.

The Earth has a carrying capacity like any ecosystem. If you want to see that in historical action, compare two ecosystems on Earth that both have/had humans and exist in relative isolation (like the Earth from other habitable planets): Easter Island – where the resources were used up by the natives and they went extinct – and Hawaii – where the wise management of resources was a cultural tradition and the native population flourished (until Capt. Cook but that is another story unrelated to resources). The notion that resources are infinite is delusional. On a universal scale, the number may be huge, but even then it is not infinite. Local resources are limited. Right now our only locale is planet Earth. It does not take a genius to figure this out, but then again, this guy works for FOX. If your IQ is higher then 85, you can’t work there. If it is lower than 80 though, they’ll put on “FOX and Friends” or promote you to management.

There are those of us who agree with the pope’s stances on some issues and not on other issues. It can be done if one is not an ideologue.

“If only someone cared what Rush Limbaugh thinks. At this point, it’s just fun to poke at the beast and see how it whines.”

    Lumpbutt said…
“But he doesn’t even disguise it folks in this encyclical. Doesn’t even disguise it! Every other word seems to be about how unfettered capitalism is destroying the world and how the rich countries have to give more money to the poor countries to make amends. I mean, that’s — call it what you want — Marxism, socialism, what have you. But if this thing is real, then it leaves no doubt here what the political leanings or inclinations of the of the of the pontiff are.”

Too funny. I bet the Pope is shaking in his boots.

  8. “There are those of us who agree with the pope’s stances on some issues and not on other issues. It can be done if one is not an ideologue.”

Agreement, especially in toto, is not required.

It’s about as honest as a blog entry entitled: “Hunter S. Thompson Condones Papal Bestiality in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.””

  10. Elaine M. says:

    Bob,

Sorry you disapprove of my blog title. I guess Gutfeld claimed that Pope Francis was the most dangerous person on Earth after hearing news of the pontiff’s encyclical because…

  11. Bob Stone says:

Raoul Duke: [Narrating] Ah, devil ether. It makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel. Total loss of all basic motor skills. Blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue. The mind recoils in horror, unable to communicate with the spinal column. Which is interesting because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can’t control it. You approach the turnstiles and know that when you get there, you have to give the man two dollars or he won’t let you inside. But when you get there, everything goes wrong. Some angry rotarian shoves you and you think “What’s happening here? What’s going on?” And you hear yourself mumbling… Dogs fu(ked the Pope… no fault of mine.

New Study Shows That Fox News Lied About Climate Science 72% Of The Time In 2013
    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/04/08/study-shows-fox-news-lied-climate-science-72-time-2013.html

    Excerpt:
A study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists revealed some surprising details regarding the three major cable news networks’ coverage on the subject of climate science. The study looked at all segments that discussed climate science throughout 2013 on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. To the surprise of nobody, Fox News misled or straight up lied the most often when it came to covering climate science. The network discussed the subject 50 times during 2013. The UCS’s study shows that Fox provided misleading coverage on 72% of those segments.

One interesting part of the report reveals that over half of that misleading coverage came from one show in particular, The Five. That show, which features four ultra-conservative pundits (Eric Bolling, Greg Gutfeld, Dana Perino and Andrea Tantaros) along with one supposed liberal (Bob Beckel), focuses on debate between the panelists. The UCS study provided examples of The Five’s panelists presenting false and misleading information. Below is one such example:

“On September 30, The Five’s Greg Gutfeld accused scientists involved with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of obfuscation when he said that, “Experts pondered hiding the news that the earth hadn’t . . . warmed in 15 years, despite an increase in emissions. They concluded that the missing heat was trapped in the ocean. It’s like blaming gas on the dog if the ocean was your dog.” This was not the case, as scientists were publicly discussing questions about the relationship between surface temperature trends, heat trapped in the deep ocean, and the flow of heat throughout the planet as the climate warms.”

Fox News’ hilarious climate denial: Global warming isn’t real because Bill Nye flew in a plane
    http://www.salon.com/2015/04/23/greg_gutfelds_demented_opposition_to_bill_nye_and_climate_change_its_the_strawpocalypse/

    Excerpt:
On Wednesday evening’s edition of Fox News’ “The Five,” host Greg Gutfeld questioned whether Bill Nye was a real climate activist, since he rode on Air Force One with President Barack Obama. He also denied that climate activism was ever really about the Earth — instead, he said, it’s about “ego and retribution.” Great Earth Day coverage, Fox!

resources are finite and re-usable, old cars, old buildings, old roads, old tires, old computers, old phones, well you get the idea.

Malthusians may as well be Luddites or Amish, they don’t take into account the great leaps in human knowledge which create more and more. I just love rational self interest, it propels human beings forward to longer and longer, healthier lives with a lot more shit to have fun with and the money to have fun.

now if we could only get those joy stealing, negative, nay saying liberals on board, the human race could move forward at a much faster pace. I guess they are the proverbial crabs in a basket, they don’t want anyone getting out of the basket so they pull them back down if they try to rise.

    Excerpt:
Last Wednesday on the Fox News program The Five, Bob Beckel attempted to discuss the recent report released by the National Climatic Data Center showing that 2012 was the hottest year on record for the United States. The report was alarming and was taken quite seriously by nearly every major news organization. Except Fox, natch.

When Beckel attempted to report the story, Gutfeld came unglued. He started laughing like a deranged hyena, and, taking a cue from Joe Walsh, immediately shouted “Lies” while Beckel was speaking. It couldn’t be more clear that the goal was to shut this conversation down with ridicule and derision, a reaction I’m sure is expected by the powers that be at this shill of an organization.

    Excerpt:
    4. Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld accuses Pope Francis of being “the most dangerous person on the planet.”

While some Fox Newsians were declaring that the Charleston shooting was evidence of the country’s war on Christianity, the Five’s Greg Gutfeld declared a vendetta against the leader of the Catholic Church.

    Weird, right?

But there it is again, that missing hypocrisy-sensing brain function.

The current Pope has been making the right-wingers of the world apoplectic ever since he declared we should love atheists. Then he had the audacity to care about the poor, and lament rampant inequality. Now, he cares about the Earth. Man! What gives?

The Pontiff’s groundbreaking encyclical on the environment warns of “unprecedented destruction of the ecosystem” unless human beings make drastic changes. It seems that the religious leader has done what right-wing pols have always suggested, left science to the scientists, who have long been telling us we’re screwed if we don’t do something fast.

Gutfeld isn’t taking that lying down. He had a few choice words for his Holiness. “He doesn’t want to be your grandfather’s Pope. He wants to be a modern Pope. All he needs is dreadlocks and a dog with a bandana and he could be on Occupy Wall Street,” he ranted.

He went on insanely about the Pope being Malthusian, actually being “in bed with Malthus,” which is weird, because Malthus is dead. “He believes that the Earth is overpopulated,“ Gutfeld sputtered, “and remember he said Catholics have to stop breeding like rabbits? Do you remember where that came from? That’s a Malthusian belief. And Malthusians believe that the Earth is overpopulated and it would be nice if there were a few billion people less. How does that happen? Global warming.”

It was pretty unhinged. Juan Williams, a voice of reason who somehow found his way onto Fox, told Gutfeld that maybe being better stewards of the Earth was not really political. “I think the problem for you is that you put it in a box of pure politics, left and right,” he said. “What about if the Pope is simply saying… we should do all we can to support God’s green earth. Is that so radical?”

Gutfeld’s response: “Um, he has a Marxist background.”

    Deeply unhinged stuff.
