It’s a relief to hear the rain. It’s the sound of
billions of drops, all equal, all equally committed
to falling, like a sudden outbreak of democracy.

After exploring what is the most annoying sound on Earth, it was inevitable that the “most beautiful” sound would also have to come up. I found this video disturbing because so many of its “most beautiful” sounds are somewhere on my “annoying” list. It seems one person’s annoying noise is another person’s most beautiful sound (If they’re going to pick engines, why these awful whining things? Doesn’t everyone know that the WWII Merlin aircraft engine and the engine of a Ferrari are the best engine sounds?)
It also disappointed me because of all the sounds I love which aren’t on their list — musical instruments well played, a singer with a great voice, someone you love whispering “I love you,” the turning of a book’s page, the sizzle of cooking, the gurgle of morning coffee brewing, or a sigh of contentment . . . and the most beautiful sound in my world — my husband’s heartbeat when my head is resting on his chest, and neither one of us has to get up and go do something.

What did they miss from your list?

The “sweetest sound” was captured beautifully by Emergency Medicine physician Aviator Doc.
His powerful diary on Daily Kos, When the sound of a child crying is the sweetest music there is… captures the sound and feel of the best and worst part of his work.
Thanks Chuck – outstanding essay
