Thoughts About the Attempted Insurrection in Washington DC

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.
As nations become corrupt and vicious, they
have more need of masters.”
   – Benjamin Franklin

“In questions of power, then, let no more be said
of confidence in man, but bind him down from
mischief by the chains of the Constitution.”
   – Thomas Jefferson

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free,
in a state of civilization, it expects what never
was and never will be.”
   – Thomas Jefferson

“Character is much easier kept than recovered.”
 – Thomas Paine in The American Crisis

Hold on to the Constitution, for if the American
Constitution should fail, there will be anarchy
throughout the world.”
   – Daniel Webster, 1851

As I looked at the mob, armed with guns and axe handles, smashing the glass on the doors inside the Capitol, trying to reach the duly elected members of Congress, disrupting the business of the nation, and forcing those same public servants, including the ones they voted for, into hiding for hours, I thought:

So these are the people who are trying to steal MY American Dream — the dream where we really are all in this together, and we help our neighbors, follow the science and cooperate when there’s a pandemic so we’re all safer and have a better chance of living through it, the dream where everybody has a chance to earn a decent living and nobody has to be homeless, and we’re mindful that natural resources other than sun and wind are not limitless and cause as many problems as they solve.

Who are these nasty, selfish, small-minded, shriveled-hearted people? What made them this way?

Then came Trump’s long-delayed twitter to them, repeating his endless lies that the election was stolen from them, and telling them they are good people, but that “we must have peace” so they should “go home.”

These are people who no longer can tell the difference between facts and lies, living in a fantasy which cannot be breached no matter how overwhelming the evidence is that it is not real or true or good.

People who think they are being oppressed because they are told they should wear a covering over their mouths and noses to prevent the spread of a plague to save their lives and the lives of others – a deadly virus that they deny is real.

At least they aren’t capable of staging a successful coup — not enough of them, not enough brains, not at all organized, and operating under a variety pack of delusional theories which flop all over the map.

This is Trump’s legacy – his tens of thousands of lies repeated over and over on Twitter, tens of thousands of Americans needlessly dead, and a pathetic and utterly failed insurrection by a few thousand of his hoodwinked followers.

Well said. This nonsense stems from allowing a mobster in training to hijack our country. Weeks before the election, he was starting his “the election is rigged” rant and his cult members believed it. Even after over 62 courts denied their specious claims, they persisted. He is not done. He has 13 more days to wreak havoc on the capital. The capital police who allowed and in some cases appeared to assist these felons, need to be rooted out of the force. Every one of the trespassing domestic terrorists that so intelligently took their pictures and video of themselves and their cohorts ransacking will pay a price.

  3. I was going to write a story to this effect. Stayed up way too late last night for some reason and by the time I was fully awake, you had already posted this fine story. Glad you beat me to it. Thanks.

We learned from local news that the doctor who owns our local family medicine clinic was at that riot yesterday. We are going to have to find another doctor, because I will never set foot in his clinic again. In a news article, he seemed proud of his participation.

I read that the FBI and DC Metro Police are working hard to identify every one of the rioters they can locate. Their refusal to wear masks helps with identification. It is reasonable to assume that most (or all) of them have photos online or in databases. Driver licenses, passports, mug shots, and endless Facebook selfies. Facial recognition is becoming more accurate and sophisticated all the time. That should help.

Thanks again, Nona, for all your hard work.

      Chuck,
The FBI can start at the White House and pick up the leader of the gang who instigated the mob.

You’re welcome Chuck – I was compelled to speak my mind – this has gone on way too long. and way too far, and must be stopped NOW.

25th Amendment or Impeachment – but get Trump the hell out of the White House in disgrace before he orchestrates something even worse.
