Billboard Hot 100 – Dedicated to the One I Love

July 13, 1959 —  The Shirelles released “Dedicated To The One I Love”

And it really is dedicated to the one I love – Today is my husband’s birthday.

Happy Birthday, Love!

The Shirelles

Dedicated to the One I Love” was written by Lowman Pauling and Ralph Bass. Pauling was a guitarist for the “5” Royales, who made the original recording in 1957.  It was also a hit for the Shirelles and later, for The Mamas and the Papas.

The Shirelles: Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie “Micki” Harris, and Beverly Lee were high school classmates in Passaic, New Jersey, when they were brought to the attention of Florence Greenberg by her daughter, who was a fellow student. Greenberg’s Tiara Records released their first hit “I Met Him on a Sunday” in 1958. This success established the Shirelles, and helped Greenberg launch the legendary Scepter label.

The version recorded by the Shirelles of “Dedicated to the One I Love” reached number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart  in 1959. But when they re-released their version in 1961, it reached number 3 on the Hot 100 chart and number 2 on the R&B charts. The song was also included on their 1961 album Tonight’s the Night.

The Beatles and the rest of  the British Invasion in the 1960s caused a sudden major shift in pop music. The Shirelles never cracked the Top Forty after 1963. But they became busy on the concert circuit during the oldies revival in the 1970s. They sang two songs in the 1973 film documentary Let the Good Times Roll.

The Shirelles were the first American girl group to have a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.” They were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

“Dedicated to the One I Love” continues to resonate. On the TV show China Beach in 1988, actress Chloe Webb, playing a USO touring backup singer, sang a tender version of this song to a fatally injured soldier for his last request. It was also the featured song in the 2014 movie The One I Love.

Lyrics:

This is dedicated to the one I love
While I’m far away from you my baby
I know it’s hard for you my baby
Because it’s hard for me my baby
And the darkest hour is just before dawn

Each night before you go to bed my baby
Whisper a little prayer for me my baby
And tell all the stars above
This is dedicated to the one I love

Life can never be exactly like we want it to be
I can be satisfied just knowing that you love me
There’s one thing I want you to do especially for me
And it’s something that everybody needs

Each night before you go to bed my baby
Whisper a little prayer for me my baby
And tell all the stars above
This is dedicated to the one I love
This is dedicated to the one I love
