TCS: How Many Languages Do You Speak?

Good Morning!

Welcome to The Coffee Shop, just for you early risers on Monday mornings.
This is an Open Thread forum, so if you have an off-topic opinion burning
a hole in your brainpan, feel free to add a comment.

Kindness is the language which the
deaf can hear and the blind can see.

– Mark Twain

I speak a few words in several different languages — made a point of learning at least how to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ in every country I’ve ever visited. However, the only language in which I can have a philosophical discussion with any fluency is English. I once tried to have a discussion comparing Mexican and American cinema with native Spanish speakers, and found my three years of High School Spanish were painfully inadequate to the task.

Poet Ali takes a radically different view of how many languages we speak, and I found his talk very persuasive. See what you think.

Nona has now resumed writing whatever comes into her head, instead of reports and pleas for funding. She lives in a small house overrun by books with her wonderful husband and a bewildered Border Collie.
