In Cabin’d Ships at Sea

In cabin’d ships at sea,
The boundless blue on every side expanding,
With whistling winds and music of the waves, the large imperious waves,
Or some lone bark buoy’d on the dense marine,
Where joyous full of faith, spreading white sails,
She cleaves the ether mid the sparkle and the foam of day, or under many a star at      night,
By sailors young and old haply will I, a reminiscence of the land, be read,
In full rapport at last.

Here are our thoughts, voyagers’ thoughts,
Here not the land, firm land, alone appears, may then by them be said,
The sky o’erarches here, we feel the undulating deck beneath our feet,
We feel the long pulsation, ebb and flow of endless motion,
The tones of unseen mystery, the vague and vast suggestions of the briny world,      the liquid-flowing syllables,
The perfume, the faint creaking of the cordage, the melancholy rhythm,
The boundless vista and the horizon far and dim are all here,
And this is ocean’s poem.

Then falter not O book, fulfil your destiny,
You not a reminiscence of the land alone,
You too as a lone bark cleaving the ether, purpos’d I know not whither, yet ever            full of faith,
Consort to every ship that sails, sail you!
Bear forth to them folded my love, (dear mariners, for you I fold it here in every          leaf;)
Speed on my book! spread your white sails my little bark athwart the imperious          waves,
Chant on, sail on, bear o’er the boundless blue from me to every sea,
This song for mariners and all their ships.

Kindness – Presley, the service dog, appears in the school yearbook (video)

“Be silly, be honest, be kind.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

–o–O–o–

From JustForMedia:

presley service dog screen shot from justformedia video

This is perhaps one of the most paw-dorable yearbook pictures
ever.

Take a look at Presley, a 5-year-old service dog in West Monroe, Louisiana, who’s been going to school every day with her owner, Seph Ware, for the past two years.

Seph, 14, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive genetic muscle disorder that causes a loss of muscle function, so Presley tags along to help him with daily activities at school like picking things up off the floor, opening and closing doors and turning the lights on and off.

As a tribute to Presley’s loyalty, Good Hope Middle School decided to include her in the yearbook right alongside her proud owner.

Notes in Emily Dickinson’s pocket – “’T is so much joy!” (Life, 4)

Emily_Dickinson_daguerreotype 3’T is so much joy! ’T is so much joy!
If I should fail, what poverty!
And yet, as poor as I
Have ventured all upon a throw;
Have gained! Yes! Hesitated so
This side the victory!

Life is but life, and death but death!
Bliss is but bliss, and breath but breath!
And if, indeed, I fail,
At least to know the worst is sweet.
Defeat means nothing but defeat,
No drearier can prevail!

And if I gain,—oh, gun at sea,
Oh, bells that in the steeples be,
At first repeat it slow!
For heaven is a different thing
Conjectured, and waked sudden in,
And might o’erwhelm me so!

Emily is said to have carried a pencil and scraps of paper in her pocket in order to always be prepared when a poem came her way.

The Coffee Shop – Grandmas Project – Knedle

The Coffee Shop is an open thread-style discussion forum for human interest news of the day.

From Chaï Chaï Films:  GRANDMAS PROJECT is a webseries – under the patronage of UNESCO – sharing the stories and recipes of grandmas around the world, filmed by their grandchildren.”

—oooOooo–

This is an open thread. There are several hosts, each host being responsible for picking a “theme of the day” and starting the discussion. However, there is no hard and fast rule about staying on topic, especially if you have a personal story burning a hole in your pocket trying to escape.
Pictures and videos are welcome in the comments.  If photos are used, please be sure you own the copyright. We would rather see your personal photos anyway, rather than random stuff copied from the internet.  Our only request is that if you use pictures or videos, take pity on those who don’t have broadband, and don’t post more than two or three in a single comment.

This is an Open Thread. Grab your cup, pull up a chair, sit a spell and share what’s on your mind today.

Cthulhu for President

When Bill Kristol, editor of the conservative “Weekly Standard,” said over the weekend that an independent candidate would be entering the race for president, this probably wasn’t what he had in mind.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro responded to Kristol’s tweet by suggesting that Cthulhu seek the highest office in the land.

Cthulhu

For those of you who are not familiar with the genius of H.P.Lovecraft, Cthulhu is a pretty impressive candidate.

…the secret priests would take great Cthulhu from his tomb to revive His subjects and resume his rule of earth…

Then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom.

What a platform!

But his campaign slogan really says it all:

Cthulhu bumper sticker

Why wait? Apocalypse NOW!

As I Ponder’d in Silence

As I ponder’d in silence,
Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
A Phantom arose before me with distrustful aspect,
Terrible in beauty, age, and power,
The genius of poets of old lands,
As to me directing like flame its eyes,
With finger pointing to many immortal songs,
And menacing voice, What singest thou? it said,
Know’st thou not there is but one theme for ever-enduring bards?
And that is the theme of War, the fortune of battles,
The making of perfect soldiers.

Be it so, then I answer’d,
I too haughty Shade also sing war, and a longer and greater one than any,
Waged in my book with varying fortune, with flight, advance and retreat,          victory deferr’d and wavering,
(Yet methinks certain, or as good as certain, at the last,) the field the world,
For life and death, for the Body and for the eternal Soul,
Lo, I too am come, chanting the chant of battles,
I above all promote brave soldiers.

Goodbye Person of Interest, gone but forever prescient

person-of-interest-creators-preview-an-exciting-ex_sfxg.640-640x360_1_.jpg

Despite appearances, I am not that avid a Person of Interest fan, I just like the strength/flaws of Shaw/Root…a symphony.  The program was basically the problem of machine intelligence and the role of human ethics in its construction with a world of human conceptions of power. And then there were the human relationships with all those foibles in an NYC setting. A video game with no controls. More unequalizer than Equalizer.

It is ultimately another post 9/11 procedural crime show except that justice remains fluid and cybernetic as well as underground with an emphasis on protecting the marginalized “when your number’s” up someone might actually care about you. Continue reading

Notes in Emily Dickinson’s pocket – “Soul, wilt thou toss again?” (Life, 3)

Emily_Dickinson_daguerreotype 3

Soul, wilt thou toss again?
By just such a hazard
Hundreds have lost, indeed,
But tens have won an all.

Angels’ breathless ballot
Lingers to record thee;
Imps in eager caucus
Raffle for my soul.
