There will be a Trumpian war, but will it win its Berlusconi time slot

By ann summers
nihilism-in-fightclub-8-638_1_.jpg

Truck Nutz Nation will get its war, what becomes important is that while there will be protest, resistance (and enlistment), and ultimately destruction and death regardless of outrage, the consequences and aftermath must be anticipated. After all, hasn’t every GOP administration had some military action – this time it gets a TV bit player as Commander-in-Chief.

In returning to an August 2015 article on Steve Bannon’s master plan, it seems now much clearer what the Trump White House will be … simply put it is the congealed animus of a population angry that inequality ever was identified as democratically important to the Republic.

We will have war, foreign or domestic most likely during the next four years because of “enemies, both foreign and domestic” and Trump is as Bannon says but “a blunt instrument” however unwitting of that mongering.

The end of America will be the projections of a reactionary group angry that slavery and segregation ever ended, that people of color should rise above their imagined station in a country “founded” by Anglo-Saxons (what Normans?).  Because after the first immigrants, all new ones “wanted their stuff”. And that’s why Ron(Ayn)Rand Paulistas.

The simple-minded delusions of lookism’s adherents believe that fantasy short of real DNA tests of ancestry, and believe that all killing will be validated by an ill-configured abstraction regarding skin pigmentation and supported by flag fetishism and bedsheet cosplay. Sometimes the cops will expedite this, other times the military, but it’s all good because don’t make Bannon angry, you won’t like him angry…. (smash) Continue reading

Neoliberalism’s death rattle cult … it still moves, come and grab … its truth

By ann summers

“We can’t be sure how many people really support Trump, Edsall reports, since there’s considerable evidence that they aren’t telling pollsters the truth. Voting for Trump, it appears, is something white people do in the shadows. It’s a forbidden desire that is both liberating and self-destructive, not unlike the married heterosexual who has a same-sex lover on the down-low, or the executive who powers through the day on crystal meth and OxyContin. On some level you know the whole thing can’t end well, but boy does it feel good right now.

I have argued on multiple occasions that white Americans, considered in the aggregate, exhibit signs of an unconscious or semi-conscious death wish. I mean that both in the Freudian sense of a longing for release that is both erotic and self-destructive — the intermingling of Eros and Thanatos — and in a more straightforward sense.”

Cornel West on the end of neoliberalism still tries to rehabilitate the Bernie-or-Bust (BoB) counterfactual position (“Sanders would have defeated Trump”), without providing a critique of the exceptional American capitalism that now continues as a strategy of tension entertaining the RWNJs with spectacles of the Left in chaos and crisis.

The left needs to plan post-protest, because if we are in a post-truth media age, the public sphere may be irretrievably shattered by the autocratic attraction of celebrity narcissism.

… the exploitation of national crises to push through controversial policies while citizens are too emotionally and physically distracted by disasters or upheavals to mount an effective resistance.

The neoliberal era in the United States ended with a neofascist bang. The political triumph of Donald Trump shattered the establishments in the Democratic and Republican parties – both wedded to the rule of Big Money and to the reign of meretricious politicians.782f523ec254856ebba435050712296f

This lethal fusion of economic insecurity and cultural scapegoating brought neoliberalism to its knees. In short, the abysmal failure of the Democratic party to speak to the arrested mobility and escalating poverty of working people unleashed a hate-filled populism and protectionism that threaten to tear apart the fragile fiber of what is left of US democracy. And since the most explosive fault lines in present-day America are first and foremost racial, then gender, homophobic, ethnic and religious, we gird ourselves for a frightening future.

Wrong, neoliberalism is something that just doesn’t end, if anything it has been resuscitated as a dissonant economic regime, with the irregulated(sic) strategy of tension brought by what passes for Trumpian strategy.

Post-truth media as policy prescription now gives the US a revival of the key elements of neoliberalism as a secondary mode of production now animated by ethno-nationalism. Barbarism got its human face, just in time for Halloween.

The main points of neoliberalism have now been given a pageant treatment and there is miscongeniality(sic) in the now normalized street-level hatred that can only get worse, only to be arbitrated and enabled by a paramilitarized police with pent-up racial animus in the rank and file. Word Cloud: GALAXY

One of the glue dots that has held my marriage together, aside from both of us NOT being Morning People, is that neither one of us can pass by a bookstore – if there’s a sale table, we may only go in to buy the bargains we just found, but otherwise we are in the door and browsing before you can say: “HowmanybooksdoyouNEED?!”

About a year and a half ago, my husband came back from running errands with groceries, car maintenance supplies, a full tank of gas and books – there was a sale table somewhere on his path. Light reading — SciFi and online Poker strategy — for him (he’s more likely to bring home stuff like The History of the Peloponnesian War or String Theory – 53rd Revised Edition) — and 100 Great Poems by Women (edited by Carolyn Kizer) for me.

In the poetry anthology, I found one poem I liked and one that I really liked – a pretty good percentage. Some of you undoubtedly already know Ruth Stone’s poetry, but she was new to me, so my husband got a Gold Star for finding the book and bringing it home.

This was the poem that started me on a search for more of Ruth Stone:

Curtains

Putting up new curtains,
other windows intrude.
As though it is that first winter in Cambridge
when you and I had just moved in.
Now cold borscht alone in a bare kitchen.

What does it mean if I say this years later?

Listen, last night
I am on a crying jag
with my landlord, Mr. Tempesta.
I sneaked in two cats.
He screams, “No pets! No pets!”
I become my Aunt Virginia,
proud but weak in the head.
I remember Anna Magnani.
I throw a few books. I shout.
He wipes his eyes and opens his hands.
OK OK keep the dirty animalscambridge-apartment
but no nails in the walls.
We cry together.
I am so nervous, he says.

I want to dig you up and say, look,
it’s like the time, remember,
when I ran into our living room naked
to get rid of that fire inspector.

See what you miss by being dead?
