“… as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror” – so begins the Trumpian Dark Age

By ann summers

Four years of political and cultural retribution are coming as are the fruition of eight years of privileged obstruction with which it remains unclear how much the Democratic party will be able to mount a Congressional resistance. This assumes that democratic processes operate without vote suppression so that can there be a mid-term recovery and a return to a Democratic majority.

We do need to try to heal, and to be proactive in the face of some familiar historical facts with which we seem to have been forced to repeat a period of repression… that there is a vestige of an arc from the Dixiecrats through the Southern Strategy to the Reagan Democrats and now on to the Trumpian “forgotten men”, dying on their Red Dawn park benches.

The end of the exceptional American experiment comes as the test subjects will die. There will be more guns, less butter, and another crash from which shock doctrines might not revive the US economy, as the next war(s) could become prophetically and terminally apocalyptic. Continue reading

Hailing the Western Imperium, How Trump’s lingua quartii imperii defeated HRC’s quants

By ann summerstrumps_hugs_the_flag

We now know how the ruling class will rule: on the backs of middle-class folks and delivered like any media ratings audience where the Brexit-style message resonated to an ideologically stable population sub-group that had been data-mined because of a Black POTUS.

Essentially it was the same ‘bagger-class, alienated yet economically stagnant, easily filled with the TV remote’s channel favorites limited to seeing diversity at a remove easily Othered. These people were sufficiently angered by the differences drawn since the Clinton 42 administration. Darn that hip-hop music from the “inner cities” and darn their welfare “socialism”.

This group was actually the same GOP base from other elections, just that the product differentiation was better constructed in 2016. Profane male TV gasbag seems so much more appealing to that base than lifelong feminist policy wonk.

Trumpian politics will be conducted like the Apprentice: Autocrat edition. Crypto-fascist Ethno-nationalist Steve Bannon’s “restoration” is more of a Meiji Restoration although modernization has little to do with 2016’s power shift to an imperious POTUS and it’s a capitalism often fantasized but never realized. Since Donald Trump was declared President-elect of the United States in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, I’ve wandered around like Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series, which I’m currently teaching at a state university — although, as fans of the novels know, there are many Katniss Everdeens. The one I am right now is Catching Fire Katniss, the one who knows the worst has happened and who has no idea what to do next, the one who spends all her time (chapters and chapters of it) playing out various scenarios in her head (challenge the electoral college? hope for impeachment, even though that would mean Pence? is Pence more or less scary than Trump? etc.). Needless to say, I haven’t figured things out yet. But there is one thing I know … follow the jump to find out what.
