The Fifth Post in the “Oh My Achin’ Head” Series: Virginia State Senator Refers to Pregnant Women as “Hosts” in a Facebook Post

SenSteveMartinBY ELAINE MAGLIARO

Steve Martin, a Republican State Senator in Virginia, seemed perturbed when he received a Valentine’s Day mailing from the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition. In the mailing, the coalition told Martin that they were “disappointed” in his voting record on women’s health care. The group asked the senator to protect women’s reproductive health options, “including preventing unwanted pregnancies, raising healthy children and choosing safe, legal abortion.”

Music Theory: 2Cellos Thunder Strike Again

Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, better known as the duo 2Cellos, strike again with their rendition of AC/DC’s “Thunderstuck”.  The only thing missing?  Is no one sets a cello on fire and the maniacal laugh of Tom Hulce . . .

Enjoy.

Vera Lynn, a trip down memory lane

by Charlton “Chuck” Stanley

It is late and I am too tired to post anything profound. As I sit here and think of those dark days of WW2, when it was not at all clear the Allies were winning or losing, a few brilliant spots shone through the darkness falling over the land. Vera Lynn was one of those bright spots.

I grew up listening to British singer Vera Lynn during WW2. She was barely out of her teens when she recorded timeless songs about separation, hope, and lovers separated by the war. One of her signature songs during those dark days was, The White Cliffs of Dover.

The Fourth Post in the “Oh My Achin’ Head” Series: Addition to Newark Archbishop’s Future Retirement Home to Cost Archdiocese $500,000

MitreSealBY ELAINE MAGLIARO

It appears that Newark Archbishop John J. Myers has “outgrown” the house in Franklin Township, New Jersey that has served as his weekend residence since 2002—when it was bought by the Archdiocese. In order to make the snug little 4,500 square foot home a more livable and spacious retirement home for Myers, a new 3,000 square foot, three-level addition is being built for him. I should note that the house, currently valued at $800,000, “already boasts five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a three-car garage and an outdoor swimming pool.”

According to Mark Mueller of the Star-Ledger, the new wing of the archbishop’s future retirement home “will include an indoor exercise pool, a hot tub, three fireplaces, a library and an elevator, among other amenities…” Mueller said the cost of the addition will be at least a half million dollars. That figure, however, doesn’t include “architectural costs, furnishings and landscaping.”

Is It Time to Change the Washington Redskins Mascot?

By Elaine Magliaro

NOTE: I originally posted the following article at Res Ipsa Loquitor on February 9, 2014.

Here is one ad that never aired during this year’s Super Bowl:

The Proud to Be video was made by Change the Mascot, a national campaign that was launched by the Oneida Nation. The video was released by the National Congress of American Indians a couple of days before this year’s Super Bowl. Change the Mascot’s aim is to end the use of the term “redskins” as the mascot for Washington, D. C.’s NFL team. The campaign “calls upon the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell to do the right thing and bring an end the use of the racial epithet.”

Not being a wealthy organization, the National Congress of American Indians couldn’t afford to “buy a television slot during the Super Bowl to run its ad.”

The Big Sleazy…Jersey Style

Chris_ChristieBY ELAINE MAGLIARO

Last week, Eric Lach of Talking Points Memo (TPM) reported that Randy Mastro, the attorney that had been hired to represent the office of Chris Christie of New Jersey, had asked officials in both Fort Lee and Hoboken “to turn over records of their interactions with reporters covering the multiple Christie scandals.” Mastro is using “the state’s open records law to get the purported victims of Christie’s office to turn over documents” to his legal team.

Lach:

Randy Mastro, the high-priced defense attorney retained by Christie’s office, on Monday filed an open records request with the borough of Fort Lee, the town affected in September by the George Washington Bridge lane closures.

Mastro’s request, which was obtained by TPM, asks for all documents and correspondence held by Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and his staff related to the lane closures (which the request calls a “toll/lane realignment”), endorsements of Christie, meetings with members of Christie’s re-election campaign, and the topic of access lanes to the bridge, generally. It also requests “all documents that Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich or members of his staff provided to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or other local or national print, internet, or television media since September 1, 2013 through the Present, regarding any of the above subjects.” Fort Lee officials are currently reviewing the records request.

84-Year-Old Nun Sentenced toThree Years in Federal Prison for Protest at Oak Ridge

by Charlton “Chuck” Stanley

US District Judge Amil R. Tharpar

US District Judge Amil R. Tharpar

U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar of the Eastern District of Kentucky is a George W. Bush appointee to the Federal Bench. This week, Tharper has sentenced an 84 year old nun, Sister Megan Rice, to almost three years in prison. 35 months to be exact. Her crime? Protesting at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Y-12 plant in 2012. Co-defendants Michael Walli and Greg Boertje-Obed were sentenced to 62 months in prison.

There is no dispute that Sister Megan and her co-defendants cut a fence and entered the grounds of the complex. They painted, “The fruit of justice is peace,” on walls and splashed baby bottles of human blood on the bunker wall.

“The reason for the baby bottles was to represent that the blood of children is spilled by these weapons,” Boertje-Obed, 58, said at trial. When confronted by a security guard, they offered him food and began singing. They were charged with defacing the property and breaking into a secure facility.
