What You Should Know about the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Government Agency Overseeing US Trade Deals

By Elaine Magliaro

“A Corporate Trojan Horse”: Critics Decry Secretive TPP Trade Deal as a Threat to Democracy

Lee Fang has an important article about the agency that is overseeing trade deals for the United States over at The Intercept. According to Fang, The Intercept obtained disclosure forms which show that the Office of the United Trade Representative “is being led by former lobbyists for corporations that stand to benefit from the deals.” That’s probably no surprise to those of us who are aware of the “revolving door” syndrome that afflicts many agencies of our federal government.

Fang said that the Obama administration has been pushing hard to complete two trade deals: the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which is a proposed free trade accord between the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim countries and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a similar agreement between the U.S. and the E.U.

Critics—including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alan Grayson—have warned about the negative impact that these trade deals will have on the United States…and on its people. Some critics “say the deals will provide corporate interests with sweeping powers to challenge banking and environmental regulations.”

Three Poems for a Friend Who Lost Her Beloved Husband

Posted by Elaine Magliaro

Whenever I face difficult times in my life…or suffer a great loss, I always turn to poetry. Reading poetry has helped me to cope with grief and tribulation.

The beloved husband of a friend passed away this week. The best way that I know how to honor his memory and to tell my friend how sorry I am is to post the following poems. I hope these poems will help to convey my sympathy to her and her family at this sad time in their lives.

Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 – 1861

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Political Cartoonist Mark Fiore Looks at Religious Freedom and Gay Commerce (VIDEO)

Posted by Elaine Magliaro

Mark Fiore:

What do you do when you sign a law that is perfectly fine and simply safeguards Religious Liberty for All in the great tradition of apple pie and God? Why, you urge your state legislators to revise it and make it acceptable to all those meddling outsiders who just don’t understand the wisdom of your legislation! Or at least that’s what you do if you’re Indiana governor Mike Pence.

Tulsa World reported this morning that supervisors at the Tulsa Sheriff’s Office were ordered to falsify training records for Robert Bates, the reserve deputy who accidentally shot Eric Harris with a gun instead of a Taser on April 2nd. The State Medical Examiner said that Harris was shot in the right axilla. He died after being transported to the Tulsa hospital.

Sources told Tulsa World that the falsified records gave Bates “credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received.”

Tulsa World said, “At least three of reserve deputy Robert Bates’ supervisors were transferred after refusing to sign off on his state-required training, multiple sources speaking on condition of anonymity told the World.”

Tulsa World reported that the sources’ claims were “corroborated by records, including a statement by Bates after the shooting, that he was certified as an advanced reserve deputy in 2007.”

“Nude Descending a Staircase” by X. J. Kennedy: A Famous Poem about a Famous Painting

NationalPoetryMonthLogoBy Elaine Magliaro

I enjoy reading poems that were written about works of art and literature–especially fairy tales. The following poem written by X.J. Kennedy has been a favorite of mine for decades. It was inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s famous painting Nude Descending a Staircase.

Note: X. J. Kennedy is a man of great wit. He has written some wonderful–and humorous–poetry for children. In 2000, he was the recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children.

Excerpt from Nude Descending a Staircase
BY X J KENNEDY

Toe after toe, a snowing flesh,
a gold of lemon, root and rind,
she sifts in sunlight down the stairs
with nothing on. Nor on her mind.

We spy beneath the banister
a constant thresh of thigh on thigh;
her lips imprint the swinging air
that parts to let her parts go by.

Georgia Conscience Clause: Walmart Pharmacist Refuses to Fill Prescription for Woman Who Suffered a Miscarriage

Screen_Shot_2015-04-13_at_1.01.37_PMBy Elaine Magliaro

A Georgia woman named Brittany Cartrett was about five weeks into her pregnancy when she suffered a miscarriage recently. In order to avoid health problems that could be caused by her miscarriage, Cartrett’s doctor gave her two options: “an invasive ‘dilation and curettage’ procedure which would surgically remove the contents of the uterus, or a pill that would have the same effect but would be less invasive. She opted for the second option.”

The doctor told Cartrett that she should take the medicine that he prescribed for her because it would help her “to pass naturally” so that she wouldn’t “have to go the more invasive route.”

March of Dimes:

Dilation and curettage (also called D&C) is when a doctor removes tissue from the lining of a woman’s uterus. Dilation (“D”) is a widening of the cervix to allow medical instruments into the uterus. Curettage (“C”) is the scraping of the walls of the uterus.

The drug that Cartrett’s doctor prescribed for her is called misoprostol, which expels the contents of a uterus. It is used to treat abortions as well as incomplete miscarriages.
