Dereliction of Duty

On February 20, 2017, Lt. General Herbert Raymond “H. R.” McMaster was named as National Security Advisor following the February 13 forced resignation of Michael T. Flynn. McMaster is a combat veteran of the first Gulf War. His most notable accomplishment was commanding Eagle Troop of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of 73 Easting on 26 February 1991 where he led his troop of nine M1A1 Abrams tanks into battle in the opening of the war’s ground attack. McMaster’s nine tanks advanced to contact and then destroyed 28 Iraqi tanks, 16 personnel carriers and 30 trucks in 23 minutes with no American losses.

His PhD dissertation at UNC was critical of American strategy in the Vietnam War, which was further detailed in his 1997 book Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam, book that explores the military’s role in the policies of the Vietnam War.

USS Lolli-Trump … “We are going to start winning again!”

By ann summers

An Iranian built mockup of a US Nimitz-class carrier is destroyed during the IRGCN Noble Prophet exercise. (ONI Photo)
Iranian officials had more than a dozen speedboats attack a replica of a US aircraft carrier today and featured the large-scale naval drill on a state TV broadcast. The nationally-televised show of force by the country’s elite Revolutionary Guard occurred near the strategically vital entrance of the Persian Gulf. The ‘Great Prophet 9’ drill was held near the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.

The Iranian mock-up of a US aircraft carrier, when first viewed from satellite pictures, did confuse intelligence analysts, because it could have been more than a photo-op tow target for a military exercise, but it did seem pretty stupid to think the Iranian navy, even its contingent of wacko Revolutionary Guards, would ever build a working ship or a movie prop like the one in Deadpool.

Even more stupid would be to build more such ships to be deployed so closely and with battlefield commanders given more operational autonomy …. oh wait.

trump-military-gear.jpg
Aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (Mar. 2, 2017) President Donald J. Trump promises sailors and shipyard workers that he’d planning to rebuild the Navy during a speech given onboard the soon-to-be commissioned aircraft carrier at the Huntington Ingalls Shipyard Newport News Shipyard

Submarines and targets – another symbol of Trumpian naval gazing on MIC procurement. Put Trump’s name on a white water elephant.

POTUS45* loves his (four-and-a-half acre) real estate and showed up to rattle sabers after a joint address to Congress that even bamboozled liberal commentators. The event was meant to spike the ball (bearings) on MIC budget matters. Then those Russian connections appeared and the 530am tweet-storm happened on Saturday.

Agent Orange promised more construction because that’s what he’s all about, shovel-ready stuff for ribbon-cutting ceremonies or being fiscally responsible by whining about the costs of the F-35, because “taking charge” of that product makes sense to the future non-US customers, and maybe even sell a few more F-18s elsewhere in the bargain. Win!

Worst of all, RWNJs invented a CT about lack of US aircraft carrier deployment by PBO prior to the 2017 inaugural by ginning up something, something “secret Muslim”. So much for media disinformation in the service of crypto-fascism.

“I christen thee USS Dog The Wag”

Orange shitgibbon really wants a ship named after him and like branded skyscrapers, it should be an aircraft carrier. Unlike JFK, DJT is pretty shallow draft and naming ships for presidents tends to either submarines (Jimmy Carter) or targets like aircraft carriers, although now GW Bush, Bill Clinton, and even, ZOMG Barack Obama, would precede Lord Dampnut in the naming queue, unless there’s a significant historical military event, assuming that there will be shipyards after WW-III.

  • U.S. Navy ships are named by the secretary of the Navy—under the direction of the president—according to a 2012 Navy report to the Congress. But within the Navy there are two warring camps—“orthodox traditionalists” who believe ship names should rigidly follow naming conventions, and “pragmatic traditionalists” who are more flexible.
  • Naming conventions for aircraft carriers and for other ships have changed over the years, but the current unofficial convention was adopted in 1996 with the 104th Congress. The Republican-dominated Congress demanded the Democratic President Bill Clinton name the next carrier after President Ronald Reagan. Clinton acquiesced after a compromise was reached—CVN-75 would be renamed Harry S. Truman after the thirty-third and Democratic president, instead of being called United States.

“Can we think of a photo-op as stupid as 2012’s Romney (alternative service, France) introducing his vice presidential running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (civilian, P90X), in Norfolk, Va. on the USS Wisconsin?”Then there’s all those Russian connections and Sessions choking on what should be some disturbing revelations on crony capitalism and kleptocracy realized at the Commander-in-Chief level.

The only pivoting since then has been the continuing strategy of tension criminalizing entire ethnicities and religions to distract from some hard realities of why Bannonism will get everyone killed,… because winning.

Even a junior ex-officer like Steve Bannon can appreciate that an ASCM (anti-ship cruise missile) or a super-cavitating missile/torpedo launched by a cheap third-world sub will make all those Argo fantasies of Benghazi revenge go south. But maybe that’s what they want, or what Putin wants.

Propaganda 102 Supplemental: Holly Would “American Sniper”

American_Sniper_posterOr “Blood Simple Is As Blood Simple Does”*

by Gene Howington

The definition of success in propaganda is a bit like pulling off a successful magic trick. It works best if no one realizes exactly how they’re being manipulated. At its pinnacle of perfection, no one even suspects they are being manipulated at all. So is “American Sniper” successful propaganda? The answer is both yes and no. We’ll examine why, but first, let us consider the film as cinema art. Does it work as a film? That answer is also a big heap of yes and no. But that, like the answer to the question before it, it not meant to imply ambivalence. It is a statement of mixed outcome.

Word Cloud: SKIN

by NONA BLYTH CLOUD

Skin is the largest organ of the human body, the envelope that keeps everything else together. It’s also a map that tells strangers something about who we are, like our approximate age, and the kind of life we live – skin that is callused and weather-beaten suggests a life spent laboring outdoors, while skin that is smooth and soft says we live and work mostly indoors.

But the biggest thing that some people notice about another person’s skin is what color it is. Because for them, the color of someone’s skin is how they decide what category that person belongs in, and then they know how they will treat them. But how do you treat someone whose skin says one thing, but whose voice and manner says something else?

And if you are living in that skin, and wondering why you don’t feel like the person you were raised to be, then how do you discover if it’s your outside or your inside or both that are rubbing you raw?

Apartheid. Segregation by skin. From 1948 to 1994, it was the official policy of the government of South Africa.

Philippa Yaa de Villiers was born in 1966, to a white Australian mother and a Ghanian father. She was given up for adoption and raised by a white family in South Africa.

“I became Phillippa Yaa when I found my biological father, who told me that if he had been there when I was born, the first name I’d have been given would be a day name like all Ghanaian babies, and all Thursday girls are Yaa, Yawo, or Yaya. So by changing my name I intended to inscribe a feeling of belonging and also one of pride on my African side. After growing up black in white South Africa, internalising so many negative ‘truths’ of what black people are like, I needed to reclaim my humanity and myself from the toxic dance of objectification.”

“Because I wasn’t told that I was adopted until I was twenty, I lacked a vocabulary to describe who I am and where I come from, so performing and writing became ways to make myself up.”

If the GOP could only stop being gutless about #RussiaGate …

By ann summers

Unfortunately, those blissfully naive Americans who need to be swayed from their support or even tacit tolerance of Lord Dampnut may need the rhetorical message of a xenophobic CT to get to the discourse space where he must leave office either prematurely or leave political life. Sadly. mitigating his damage has little middle ground. We are in for a bad historical period of repression, an apotheosis of sad RWNJ policy shibboleths.C6AYTpOWUAMA9nH_1_[1]

Imagine if the same kind of attention could be trained and sustained on other issues—like it has been on the Muslim travel ban. It would not get rid of Trump, but it might mitigate the damage he is causing.

Trump is doing nothing less than destroying American democratic institutions and principles

  • by turning the presidency into a profit-making machine for his family,
  • by poisoning political culture with hateful, mendacious, and subliterate rhetoric,
  • by undermining the public sphere with attacks on the press and protesters, and
  • by beginning the real work of dismantling every part of the federal government that exists for any purpose other than waging war.

Russiagate is helping him—both

  • by distracting from real, documentable, and documented issues, and
  • by promoting a xenophobic conspiracy theory in the cause of removing a xenophobic conspiracy theorist from office.
