WWII Era American Propaganda

By GENE HOWINGTON

Originally, I drafted this article with a preface about the story Michael Hastings recently broke on BuzzFeed about an amendment to the latest defense authorization bill that would “legalize the use of propaganda on American audiences.” However, as I worked on it this morning, our very own poet laureate and research librarian extraordinaire Elaine Magliaro cut me off at the pass with her own excellent article on the subject.  So instead of repeating the points she makes which illustrate why understanding propaganda is important, I will refer you to her post at Res Ipsa Loquitur, “How about Some Government Propaganda for the People Paid for by the People Being Propagandized?

Now that the kid gloves have come off regarding the governmental efforts to control your mind by controlling both your information and how you receive it, let’s discuss the nature of propaganda. Now more than ever, it is important to know the basics of how propaganda works. Since words are the basic building block of the English language, we’ll start with asking what is propaganda, look at some general history of the practice, consider the importance of meaning of words, the ideas of connotation and denotation, and the process of selecting “value loaded” words.

Word Cloud: PARADOX

Word Cloud Resized

by NONA BLYTH CLOUD

“Cut off from the sight of God, modern man wanders about in his Land of Unlikeness, driven by greed and cruelty.”

– Jerome Mazzaro, commenting on Robert Lowell’s first poetry collection Land of Unlikeness

Robert Lowell (1917–1977) was full of contradictions. His parents were both descendants of old and notable New England families, the Lowells and the Winslows, but the tension and unhappiness of his childhood made him reject his heritage. He spent two months living in a tent on the lawn of his friend and fellow poet Alan Tate’s family home when he left Harvard abruptly after a fight with his father, then went to Kenyon College in Ohio.

He converted to Catholicism, and married his first wife, fiction writer Jean Stafford. When Robert Lowell refused induction into the armed services, he spent five months in jail as a conscientious objector.

And through it all, he wrote. Land of Unlikeness was published in 1944 in a limited edition of two hundred and fifty copies by Harry Duncan at the Cummington Press. It was full of the fervor of a new religious convert, but made barely a ripple in the literary world.

The Holy Innocents

Listen, the hay-bells tinkle as the cart
Wavers on rubber tires along the tar
And cindered ice below the burlap mill
And ale—wife run. The oxen drool and start
In wonder at the fenders of a car,
And blunder hugely up St. Peter’s hill.
These are the undefiled by woman–their
Sorrow is not the sorrow of this world:
King Herod shrieking vengeance at the curled
Up knees of Jesus choking in the air,

A king of speechless clods and infants. Stillclinkered-street
The world out—Herods Herod; and the year,
The nineteen—hundred forty—fifth of grace,
Lumbers with losses up the clinkered hill
Of our purgation; and the oxen near
The worn foundations of their resting—place,
The holy manger where their bed is corn
And holly torn for Christmas. If they die,
As Jesus, in the harness, who will mourn?
Lamb of the shepherds, Child, how still you lie.

Moron unwinding the administrative state (of travel, among other things)

By ann summers

“During the first week of the Muslim-ban, foreign business travel dropped by an astounding 185 million dollars. European flight searches for the United States have dropped by 11.6%, “

If at first you screw it up, try, try to screw it up again … except this time we promise we won’t take your oil ….

Officials: New Trump order drops Iraq from travel ban list

160406143316-trump-travel-restricted-super-169_1_1

After Trump signed the original order, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi refuted the ban and said he would consider reciprocal measures.

Many Iraqi lawmakers urged the government to ban Americans from Iraq in response, despite the potential effects that might have on the anti-IS fight.

Al-Abadi then met with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in Baghdad this month and underscored the U.S.-Iraqi partnership.

And Mattis walked back comments made by Trump, suggesting that Americans could get another chance to seize Iraqi oil as compensation for its military efforts there.

“We’re not in Iraq to seize anybody’s oil,” Mattis told reporters on that trip. Al-Abadi also met with Vice President Pence in Munich earlier this month, where the two publicly discussed ways of strengthening cooperation.

The Trump administration’s changes to the immigration order follow a report by intelligence analysts at the Homeland Security Department, which found insufficient evidence that citizens of the seven Muslim-majority countries posed a terror threat to the United States. A draft of the analysis was obtained last week by the AP.

Unfortunately, the geniuses on Lord Dampnut’s team haven’t reckoned that keeping the same list minus one, and not banning Syrians infinitely might have a deeper effect on the entire travel sector of the global economy,

Because America is so great no one wants to go anywhere, Americans don’t need to share itself with the rest of the world, and everything else can be done on the Twitter machine. And every traveler’s information might be made public.

Email trouble, again

by

Published today in the Indianapolis Star, by Fatima Hussein.

Vice President Mike Pence continues his fight to keep an email that he received as Governor of Indiana out of the public eye. A FOIA request dating to 2014 requests the contents of an email that may divulge the Republican Party’s strategies for methods that were proposed in fighting President Obama’s immigration policies. The battle is now before the Indiana Supreme Court.

It is thought that if this case is taken by the Indiana Supreme Court it may redefine the bounds of open public communication with the Governor’s office.

it’s always about Lord Dampnut, even if he wasn’t at the Oscars

A LITTLE SAD! 5 A.M. BOWEL MOVEMENT AT BREITBART

Lord Dampnut was so trolled by Hollywood tweeters that he instead chose to use Breitbart, an exemplar of FakeNews, to exercise his post-Oscars spew about the show being “focused so hard on (him)”. IRONIC!

President Trump is calling Sunday’s Oscar ceremony “sad,” saying the awards show was “focused so hard on politics” it led to the epic mix-up over the best picture winner.

“I think they were focused so hard on politics that they didn’t get the act together at the end,” Trump said Monday in an interview with Breitbart News.

“It was a little sad. It took away from the glamour of the Oscars,” Trump said of the 89th annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Breitbart floated a new conspiracy theory about the disastrous ending at the Oscars: President Trump sabotaged ceremony as revenge against host Jimmy Kimmel.

“If there’s anyone from CNN, the New York Times … anything with Times in it, even the Medieval Times, we’d like you to leave the building … Fake tans we love, but not fake news.” Trump’s creationist cabinet member Dr Ben Carson had one zinger fired at him, when Jimmy Kimmel said that Marvel movie Dr Strange was nominated not only for visual effects, “but was also named secretary for Housing and Urban Development”.

“Some of you will get to come up on this stage tonight and give a speech that the president of the United States will tweet about in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movement tomorrow.”

www.theguardian.com/…

Piers Morgan, who first met Mr Trump on the first series of his Celebrity Apprentice, has delighted in standing up for President Trump in the face of criticism. Just recently, Australian comedian Jim Jefferies told Morgan to “f*ck off” on primetime TV for outrightly refusing to call President Trump’s hard-line immigration ban a “Muslim ban”.

While the Oscars cock-up was initially thought to be the fault of presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, it appears the responsibility lies with a crew member to ensure the correct envelopes make it onto the stage.
