We have a new writer.

Dr. Nicole Plyler Fisk

By Chuck Stanley, Editor

We were lucky enough to get Dr. Nicole Plyler Fisk to come on board as a writer. She is a very special person.  She teaches English, and points out that she has gone both the adoptive and pregnancy route. Having been there and done that, I have a special appreciation for her.

Well, not the pregnancy part, I had to leave that up to my wife, but definitely understand adoption. My wife often said of adoptive children, “They don’t grow under your heart, they grow in it.”

Flowers For Socrates, From Aleppo

by Nicole Plyler Fisk

I’m honored to be a contributing writer to this blog (thanks, Chuck, for the invite). For my first piece, I thought that something with flowers would be appropriate, so I’m adapting a diary I posted, originally, to Daily Kos. But, it’s hard to divert attention from the 2016 presidential election to Syria, both there and on my Facebook page, so anything that has to do with the latter quagmire needs all the help it can get, from as many platforms as will host it. Thanks, FFS, for being one of those. ~Nicole Plyler Fisk

Recently, UK Channel 4 News ran a story about “the last gardener in Aleppo.” The story follows an Aleppo man, whose name, Abu Wad, translates to “father of the flowers,” and his 13-year-old son, Ibrahim. For the past five years, Father-of-the-flowers and Ibrahim have maintained their garden center in rebel-held Aleppo, despite continuous bombing from Assad and his Russian allies. How have they managed? Father-of-the-flowers explains that they think of the bombs as Beethoven’s music, they remind themselves that the world belongs to ordinary people, and they constantly rebuild what’s been destroyed — by planting their flowers in public spaces, like roundabouts.

Trump’s immigration policy as ethnic cleansing prescription

By ann summers

make-america-white-again_%282%29.jpeg

So we now have heard from an orange realtor pitching the US a Southern Wall timeshare that Mexico will pay for. And being Latino is not illegal, nor is being Muslim, yet that is what is now becoming a deportable crime.

Trump’s immigration policy(sic) speech of 31 August gives us the clearest perspective of an anachronistic nationalism that presumes that the nation is defined by the prerogatives of a racial majority that is rapidly reacting to its insecurity rather than the promise of democracy.Naked nativism has become motivated by oppressing ethnic minorities defined ignorantly by pigmentation before culture or even class. Its stubborn resistance comes from a false consciousness of what are the material or even ideological causes of economic and status exploitation and alienation.

How many low-information voters will be deceived by simple demagoguery and appeals to the insecurity of cultural differences. Me first is not America First.

flag/anthem/pledge blasphemy cuts only one way – either everyone or no one is politically correct

By ann summers

In the case of one of the SF 49er quarterbacks, the negative reaction to his personal act of sitting during the playing of the national anthem has been sadly opportunistic and disproportionate even as the scale of the documenting medium has amplified the media reaction.PC

Good Morning!

Barred Owl

I’ve streamlined The Coffee Shop for you early risers on Monday mornings. There’s less small-print text to read, more story to see. This is still an Open Thread forum, so if you have an off-topic opinion burning a hole in your brainpan, feel free to add a comment.  ____________________________________________________________

Bertie Gregory is still in search of the elusive Sea Wolf, but finds plenty to photograph on Vancouver Island while the wolves stay out of sight

Now what are they going to do?

By Terry Welshans

labrador howlingThis last week has brought us some unexpected changes in the political arena. Donald Trump has replaced the upper management at his campaign headquarters, replacing his Russian power-broker with Steve Bannon who is registered to vote in Florida at a vacant house where he has never lived. He has, just recently changed his address to a  real livable house, one that he apparently shares with Andy Badolato, who reports for Breitbart News and has worked with Bannon in the past on the production of political films.

Florida voter law requires “When you register to vote, an actual residence address is required by law.” Does Mr. Bannon live in Florida or California? The Guardian of Friday 26 August 2016 reports that “As recently as last week he was reported to be a resident of Laguna Beach in Orange County, California, where, according to public records, he owns a house.”
