Award-winning political cartoonist Mark Fiore noted that since Pope Francis came “out on the side of acknowledging human-caused global warming, Republican presidential contenders are suddenly on the side of ‘science’ not religion.”
Fiore:
Thanks to the pope, it’s becoming more difficult to cast yourself on the side of the angels and the oil companies at the same time. Never mind that human-caused global warming is established science, political contributions from the oil and gas industry are waaaay more important than saving the world. And it’s not just the Republican candidates, a surprising number of regular ol’ Republican people are still buying into the “hoax” line fed to them by big oil and politicians.

Last night, Bill Maher did a funny “New Rules” segment about the Republican party’s “fondness for axing both country-of-origin meat labeling and the estate tax…” He talked about House Republicans pushing “for a measure that would ban meat producers from including country-of-origin information regarding their products.” Maher wondered “how such a law could be phrased as a benefit to consumers.”
Maher suggested that the party’s new mantra should be “Eat shit and die.” He said the new regulation was about shielding corporations from people – not saving people from corporations. Maher asked, “How do you write that law in a way that explains that law is good for people? What do you name it, the ‘Freedom From Information Act?’

It has been widely reported that Dylann Roof, the young man who killed nine people in a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, was influenced by a white supremacist group known as the Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC/CCC). Roof cited the group in his racist manifesto. The council is now reportedly “under fire for allegedly inspiring racial hatred in Roof, a 21-year-old high school dropout.”
According to Miranda Blue of Right Wing Watch, the CofCC released a statement which condemned the murders but defended Roof’s “legitimate grievances” against African Americans. Blue noted that Earl Holt, president of the group, “released his own statement saying that the shooter had merely ‘gleaned accurate information’ from the group’s website about ‘the seemingly endless incidents involving black-on-white murder.’”

Jordan Weissmann of Slate said that Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, who authored the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the United States, “is sometimes made fun of for his notoriously purple prose.” He said that today, however, Kennedy “managed to close his opinion with one of the most beautiful passages you’ll likely read in a court case.” Weismann said he teared up when reading it–as did a few other Slate staffers.

The Supreme Court of the United States has overturned the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, ruling same sex marriage legal in the entire United States. Today’s ruling overturns bans in 14 states which had enacted prohibitions against same sex marriage.

The Associated Press reported last week that Governor Greg Abbott of Texas had tapped Houston Republican Donna Bahorich, a home-schooler, to serve as the new chairwoman of the Texas Board of Education. The AP said that Bahorich’s nomination has to be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Texas Senate.
Ryan Poppe of Texas Public Radio said that Abbott is “now being criticized for selecting someone whose own kids have never attended a public school.”
Last week, when narcissist, real estate magnate, and reality TV star Donald Trump declared that he was running for president, he said that the United States had become “a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems.” He accused the Mexicans who were coming into the United States of being criminals and rapists. He also claimed that they were bringing drugs into this country. The pompous bloviator promised to build a Great Wall on the nation’s southern border.
Trump said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” He claimed that he had spoken with border guards who told him that’s what our country was getting from south of the border.
