Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri was up bright and early talking with Mika Brzezinski and squinty-eyed Joe Scarborough on MSNBC this morning. Poor Claire appeared a bit miffed because she thinks that Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is getting “a pass” from the news media. She said, “I very rarely read in any coverage of Bernie that he’s a socialist.” McCaskill said that Sanders was “too liberal” and claimed that he had an “extreme message.”

McCaskill believes that the media is “giving presidential candidate Bernie Sanders too much credit because of its hunger for a competitive primary race.” She said, “I think everybody wants a fight and they are not giving the same scrutiny to Bernie Sanders that they are giving to certainly Hillary Clinton and the other candidates.”

Bill Kristol–neoconservative political analyst and commentator, founder and editor of The Weekly Standard, and clueless pundit who is wrong about everything–got into a heated discussion with Bloomberg’s Politics Editor John Heilemann on Morning Joe Wednesday. Kristol had warned about “a campaign to disrespect the memory of Confederate soldiers in the wake of the South Carolina church massacre.”

Brendan James of TPM said that Kristol–in several tweets that he posted yesterday and on Morning Joe earlier today–“accused ‘the left’ of trying to tear down Confederate statues and ban the teaching of speeches by Abraham Lincoln” after retailers like Amazon and eBay announced that they would discontinue selling Confederate memorabilia.

Willaim Saletan has an interesting article titled Whitewashing Terrorism over at Slate. In his article, Saletan claimed that “Republicans have firm rules for fighting terrorism—unless it’s committed by domestic racists.” He added that the Republican Party’s philosophy on fighting terrorism is clear. He provided a synopsis of it.

Saletan:

First, we must prioritize the fight. Second, we must challenge the teachings that motivate terror. Third, we must confront separatists who promote these ideas in our own country. Fourth, we must monitor networks that fund radicalization and violence.

Leonard Papania, the police chief of Gulfport, Mississippi, appears to be unhappy with his state’s open carry laws “after a man strolling through a Walmart Sunday night menaced shoppers by loading and racking shells into his shotgun…” The incident caused police to dispatch a SWAT team to evacuate the store. Papania said that “he would have arrested the unidentified man and his companion if he could for stretching the city’s police forces thin while panicked Walmart employees huddled in a safe room.”

On Monday afternoon, the Gulfport Police Chief held a press conference in order “to discuss a situation that had many Walmart shoppers terrified Sunday evening.” “That’s not normal,” Papania said when speaking “about two men who went into Walmart, Winn Dixie and Krispy Kreme armed with a shotgun.”

According to Reuters, the Baltimore Sun has reported that the autopsy of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore black man who died in April after being hurt while in police custody, “shows he suffered a ‘high-energy injury’ like those in shallow-water diving accidents.”

Reuters noted that Gray’s spinal injury “was most likely caused when the police van in which he was riding suddenly decelerated, the newspaper said.” The Baltimore Sun reportedly cited a copy of the autopsy report, which has not been made public.

For Father’s Day: Poems about Fathers by Award-Winning Poet Li-Young Lee (VIDEOS)

Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee

I fell in love with the poetry of Li-Young Lee when I read his debut collection Rose. Published in 1986, the book won the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Poetry Award. In the foreword that he wrote for Rose, Gerald Stern said that when he first came across Li-Young Lee’s poetry, he “was amazed by the large vision, the deep seriousness and the almost heroic ideal “reminiscent more of John Keats, Rainer Maria Rilke and perhaps Theodore Roethke than William Carlos Williams on the one hand or T.S. Eliot on the other.” Stern added that what characterizes Lee’s poetry “Is a certain humility, a kind of cunning, a love of plain speech, a search for wisdom and understanding…”
