What You Should Know about “Operation Merlin,” Jeffrey Sterling, the CIA, the Obama Administration and Whistleblowers

200px-CIA.svgBy Elaine Magliaro

Does the name Jeffrey Sterling sound familiar? It should. Sterling is the former CIA officer who was convicted in late January of violating the Espionage Act. Sterling, 47,  was accused of giving  journalist James Risen “classified information about U.S. plans to spoil Iran’s nuclear program…” Sterling is supposedly the source “that helped Risen drag a bizarre CIA project called Operation Merlin out of hiding behind the label ‘classified.'”

Sterling was reportedly fired from the CIA in 2002–and indicted for espionage in 2011. Sterling could possibly face dozens of years in prison. He is due to be sentenced in April.

Matt Apuzzo (New York Times) said that Sterling’s conviction was “a significant victory for the Obama administration, which has conducted an unprecedented crackdown on officials who speak to journalists about security matters without the administration’s approval.” Risen refused to identify his sources.

Nuclear War and Clashing Ukraine Narratives

“[A]s far as it is possible to do so, these two wonderful vessels are designed to be unsinkable” – White Star Line publicity brochure circa 1910 for the twin ships Olympic and Titanic

Two years later the world would learn just how catastrophic hubristic complacency can be.

TitanicWhen the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to Three Minutes to Midnight, citing climate change and the threat of a renewed arms race between Russia and the U.S., it reserved just a single sentence to the conflict in Ukraine.  Perhaps not even the folks at the Bulletin are immune to propaganda.

Uncle Sam v Bear in UkraineRobert Parry has written an excellent article regarding misinformation about the conflict in Ukraine titled “Nuclear War and Clashing Ukraine Narratives”

Excerpts:

The U.S. government and mainstream media are swaggering toward a possible nuclear confrontation with Russia over Ukraine without any of the seriousness that has informed this sort of decision-making throughout the nuclear age. Instead, Official Washington seems possessed by a self-righteous goofiness that could be the prelude to the end of life on this planet.

Nearly across the U.S. political spectrum, there is a pugnacious “group think” which has transformed what should have been a manageable political dispute in Ukraine into some morality play where U.S. politicians and pundits blather on about how the nearly year-old coup regime in Kiev “shares our values” and how America must be prepared to defend this regime militarily.

This distorted American narrative has represented one of the most unprofessional and dangerous performances in the history of modern U.S. journalism, rivaling the false conventional wisdom about Iraq’s WMD except in this case the media propaganda is aimed at a country in Russia that really does have weapons of mass destruction.

Putin also does not object to Ukraine building closer economic ties to Europe and he offered a new referendum in Crimea on whether the voters still want to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, said a source familiar with the Kremlin’s thinking. But Putin’s red lines include no NATO expansion into Ukraine and protection for ethnic Russians by disarming the neo-Nazi militias, the source said.

If such an arrangement or something similar isn’t acceptable and if the killing of ethnic Russians continues, the Kremlin would support a large-scale military offensive from the east that would involve “taking Kiev,” according to the source.

A Russian escalation of that magnitude would likely invite a vigorous U.S. response, with leading American politicians and pundits sure to ratchet up demands for a military counterstrike against Russia. If Obama were to acquiesce to such bellicosity – to avoid being called “weak” – the world could be pushed to the brink of nuclear war.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey Establishes Research and Essay Competition as a Tribute to the Late Great King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (With a Mark Fiore Video)

The Late King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia

The Late King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia

By Elaine Magliaro

On January 23rd, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz passed away at the age of ninety. To honor the  memory of this kind and benevolent (?) world figure, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Martin E. Dempsey, has established a research and essay competition.  Really! I’m not kidding. The competition is being “hosted” by the National Defense University (NDU).

Writing for DoD News, Jim Garamone said that General Dempsey thinks the “essay competition is a fitting tribute to the life and leadership of the Saudi Arabian monarch.” Garamone noted that the good king “oversaw the modernization of his country’s military during the time he spent as commander of the Saudi Arabian National Guard, a position he held from 1963 until he became king in 2005.”

In a statement announcing the competition, Dempsey said, “This is an important opportunity to honor the memory of the king, while also fostering scholarly research on the Arab-Muslim world, and I can think of no better home for such an initiative than NDU.”

Who Wants to Fill the World With Silly Rockstars?

Jack White unironically playing at the White House in 2010.

Jack White unironically playing at the White House in 2010.

by Gene Howington

Let me start by saying “What’s wrong with that? I’d like to know.” I’m a huge fan of Jack White. From The White Stripes to his solo and collaborative works, he’s one of the most interesting guitarists and songwriters going today. But his management company, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment (WME), has blacklisted the University of Oklahoma (OU). What was their egregious sin that merited saying their client would never play OU again? The Oklahoma Daily, the OU newspaper, published White’s contract with the university. The contract wasn’t a state secret and the paper obtained it via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. This isn’t an uncommon practice. There are whole web sites devoted to publishing the sometimes very strange riders that entertainers have on their contracts. What was the straw that broke the camel’s back?

They published Jack White’s guacamole recipe.

Oh the horror.

POETRY FRIDAY: A Poem about Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk

By Elaine Magliaro

As we’ve been having a discussion about vaccinations and anti-vaxxers at FFS, I thought I’d post a poem that I wrote a few years ago for a poetry anthology titled Dare to Dream…Change the World. Jill Corcoran is the individual responsible for putting together the anthology, which paired inspirational poems with biographical poems about people who invented something, stood for something, said something…people who defied the naysayers and not only changed their own lives, but the lives of people all over the world. My biographical poem about Jonas Salk was paired with an inspirational poem written by my friend Janet Wong, an award-winning poet. Her poem is titled My Polio Shot. Janet’s mother–who was born in Korea–contracted polio when she was young. daretodream2 I chose Jonas Salk as the subject of my poem because I remember how fearful parents were back in the 1950s that their children might contract the dread disease—one that had crippled so many. Highly infectious, poliomyelitis—also known as infantile paralysis—chiefly affected children. I can still vividly recall standing in line at Peabody City Hall when I was  nine or ten years old waiting to get vaccinated. I also remember how relieved everyone was after the Salk vaccine had been declared safe and effective. Jonas Salk changed the world for me… and for millions of other people. Continue reading

Harper Lee

Harper Lee

By Elaine Magliaro

Hillel Italie of the Associated Press reported today that Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of To Kill a Mockingbird, will publish her second book later this year. Her publisher announced today that Go Set a Watchman, a novel Lee “completed in the 1950s and put aside, will be released July 14.” The manuscript was “rediscovered” last fall. Hillel said that the book “is essentially a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, although it was finished earlier.”

The BBC said that Go Set A Watchman features Scout, the main character from the To Kill a Mocking, as an adult.

BBC:

Lee wrote it in the mid-1950s but put it aside on the advice of her editor.
“I thought it a pretty decent effort.” said Lee, now 88. “I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

Governor Scott Walker Planning to Cut $300 Million in Funding for the University of Wisconsin…While Proposing $220 Million Investment for Milwaukee Bucks Arena

Governor Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin)

Governor Scott Walker

By Elaine Magliaro

Governor Scott Walker–whom Charlie Pierce refers to as “the goggle-eyed homunculus hired by Koch Industries to run their Midwest subsidiary formerly known as the state of Wisconsin”–plans to unveil a budget on Tuesday evening that will reportedly “slash hundreds of millions of dollars from the state’s public universities over the next two years.” Alice Ollstein of ThinkProgress said that students, professors and state lawmakers “are already blasting the plan — the deepest cut in state history…” They told ThinkProgress that they are “organizing to block its passage.”

Ollstein said that Governor Walker “told local right-wing radio host Charlie Sykes that his budget cuts over the past few years have created positive ‘efficiencies’ at the university…” Walker said, “Maybe it’s time for faculty and staff to start thinking about teaching more classes and doing more work.”

Ollstein:

At the same time, Walker is calling for a nearly $500 million new basketball stadium in Milwaukee for the Bucks. Under his plan, the state would take out $200 million in bonds to pay for the arena, and the county and city of Milwaukee would have to chip in as well. The team’s owner has promised some private funding, and Walker claims the taxes the NBA players will pay will make up the difference.

Preventable Childhood Diseases, The Measles Outbreak, and Anti-Vaxxers

By Elaine Magliaro

Measles outbreak fuels vaccine debate

According to Face the Nation, Tom Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said “his agency is ‘very concerned’ about the possibility of a large measles outbreak in the U.S. because of the growing number of people who have not been vaccinated against the disease.” Frieden said, “What we’ve seen is, as over the last few years, a small but growing number of people have not been vaccinated. That number is building up among young adults in society, and that makes us vulnerable,” Frieden said during his interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. Frieden added, “We have to make sure that measles doesn’t get a foothold in the U.S. It’s been actually eliminated from this country for 15 years. All of our cases result, ultimately, from individuals who have traveled and brought it back here.”

Rebecca Kaplan (Face the Nation):

There are at least 102 reported cases of measles in 14 states, according to CDC statistics. Frieden said there will likely be more cases going forward, and the CDC is taking “aggressive public health action” to identify contacts and isolate those infected in order to stop the spread.
